Paralyzed dogs can walk again
Sadly, there are many dogs that are paralyzed. This usually happens when a car hits them. Luckily, there is a treatment that can help your dog. Scientists can cure the paralysis by injecting a dog with cells from the lining of their nose. Scientists are hoping that in the near future, people with paralysis can be also cured.
According to a research, nasal cells, have the ability to support nerve fibers growth, between the nose and the brain. A study, included 34 dogs. All of them were paralyzed and they were unable to move their back legs. Some breeds of the dogs, used in the study are more prone to this injury. After the treatment, a dog can use his back legs again.
Scientists take cells from the lining of a nose, and grew them for a couple of weeks. Then, they injected them to the injured spot in 23 dogs. The rest of dogs were injected with a neutral fluid. Many of the dogs, who were injected with these cells, were able to use their back legs. They could run on a treadmill. Scientists say that those cells, can regenerate nerve fibers in the damaged parts of a spinal cord. So, dogs can use their back legs again.
Robin Franklin, from the University of Cambridge said that this is a very important discovery that can change the lives of many dogs. Also, it is possible that this procedure may solve the same problem among human. Scientists are still working on the treatment, trying to make it even more effective. One day, it can believe the solution for many injured dogs.
